Report: Marching band as tough as sports

June 2, 2009 Many marching bands have become highly choreographed visual shows requiring strenuous physical activity. More than 38 percent of high school band members surveyed said they suffered an injury as a direct result of playing in marching band.

Ninety-five-percent reported muscle soreness or stiffness after practice.

The report presented at the American College of Sports Medicine's annual meeting calls for safety guidelines and better training for marching band members.
