Sources tell ABC7 he is the youngest of three children. His father was apparently home at the time of the fall.
A neighbor speculates the boy fell from the window where some clothes were hanging. He may have been trying to reach for the clothes when he tumbled out of the window. It is about a 15-foot drop to the patio below. Neighbors also speculate the first floor awning may have broken the fall and minimized injuries.
"When I saw all the ambulance and all this coming I came out to my back window and I looked out the window and he was laying on the concrete, and that's when they were running to help him," said Sue Jurevis, witness.
Paramedics transported the boy in critical condition to Children's Memorial Hospital. However, they have since upgraded his condition to fair.
Officials have not yet released his name.
