Man charged in pregnant girlfriend's murder

Pregnant woman beaten to death
June 4, 2009 (HANOVER PARK, Ill.) The offender, Rafael Alvarado, was charged with one count of first degree murder and one count of intentional homicide of an unborn child.

Alvarado will be transported to Cook County bond court on Friday morning.

According to the Mayor Rodney Craig of Hanover Park, the victim is Norma Favela. Craig said she was seven months pregnant and beaten to death.

A portion of the quiet suburban street became a crime scene as police investigated a brutal murder inside a home. Police were called to Favela's home just after midnight. Family and friends say Norma was found dead inside. They also say say the 31-year-old mother of two was expecting her third child within the next two months.

"She was a very nice lady. I would see her passing on the streets and we'd say hi. Occasionally we would talk. She was very quiet," said Debra Butler, neighbor.

"From my understanding she was a good woman. She had a lot going on for herself. She was legally married to a man in Mexico she has two kids from," said Marsha Dearmond, neighbor.

One neighbor describes Alvarado as the jealous type.

"Very jealous-type person. He was just jealous of everything she had going for herself. Going to school, working," said Dearmond.

Her sister-in-law came to the police on Thursday looking for answers. Her husband translated for his wife when asked about the boyfriend.

"She knows the guy was not good person for her," said Transito Escobedo, victim's relative.

Favela is survived by her two daughters, an 11-year-old and a 3-year-old.
