Class action status sought in jail births suit

Former inmates, who say they were shackled while giving birth, are asking a judge to give class action status to a lawsuit against the Cook County Sheriff's Department. Some of the women gathered at their attorney's office Monday. The first lawsuit was filed last week by a woman who says she was in shackles while in labor until her doctor demanded they be removed.

Lawyers say the practice violates state law and the U.S. Constitution.

A sheriff's department spokesperson says deputies follow department policy, and the actions conform to state law.
