Biograph Theater

June 30, 2009 Victory Gardens bought the building in 2001, renovated it to the tune of $11.8 million into a state-of-the-art live theater complex, and reopened in 2005 as the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater. Currently, they are about to put the finishing touches on a new studio theater on the 2nd floor, which will debut next Fall, and we'll be a two-stage complex

Biograph Q&A

* What makes Victory Gardens so unique?

-We are Chicago's #1 producer of new plays. In our 35 years, we've produced more mainstage world premiere plays than any other Chicago theater.

-We are devoted to the writer - we have our own ensemble of playwrights (as opposed to an ensemble of actors - Steppenwolf - or directors aka the Goodman.) Our commitment to new plays and our unique playwrights set-up led to us receiving the 2001 Tony Award for Regional Theater. Today, Chicago is the only U.S. city with 4 regional Tony Award winners - us, Steppenwolf, Goodman and Chicago Shakespeare.

-The show we are about to open, Blackbird, stars William Petersen. Bill got his Equity card at Victory Gardens 30 years ago, and he has remained steadfastly loyal to us. Dennis is the director of Blackbird, and cast Bill in his first lead role - Dillinger, in a play called Dillinger, in 1978!
