Airlines cut fares to boost ticket sales

July 8, 2009 Southwest Airlines set off the cuts on Tuesday by lowering one-way tickets to $30, $60 or $90 each way depending on the distance traveled.

American, Delta, United and U.S. Airways quickly matched Southwest's offer along with discount carriers like Frontier and Air Tran. All are offering one way fares for under $100.

The cheaper fares are for a limited number of seats which must be purchased in the next few days.
