About a dozen homes were evacuated in Hammond, Indiana after a gas leak on Thursday. Officials say a contractor damaged a gas main at 169th and Ridgeland late Thursday afternoon. Northern Indiana Public Service Company says the main has now been shutdown.

But nearby homes have no natural gas service and electricity has been turned off too because the gas spilled onto an electric line.
