Rabid bat found in Peotone

July 17, 2009 (WILL COUNTY, Ill.) The bat was found Wednesday hanging from a pool ladder at a home in Peotone. Tests confirmed that it was infected with rabies.

Will county's first rabid bat of 2009 was found near a home in Homer Glen. No humans have been exposed to the disease, which is transmitted through the bite of a warm-blooded animal.

Any contact with bats should be reported to Will County Animal Control. Will County has had 41 confirmed cases of rabid bats since 1995.
