Thousands wrap up National Urban League conference

August 1, 2009 (CHICAGO) More than 4,000 people visited Chicago for the conference, which carried the theme "The Path to Power."

Violence, education reform and the economy were among the many issues speakers addressed over the last few days.

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin delivered the welcoming remarks Saturday morning and emphasized the importance of getting legislation to reform health care passed soon.

"This great nation of ours, America, should view health care as a right. It is not a privilege. It is not something that is just a province of the wealthy. It should be a province of every single American, black, white and brown, young and old, wherever you live in America," Durbin said.

The National Urban League awards gala was set to take place Saturday evening with honorees including former State Sen. Emil Jones, Mayor Daley and Tyra Banks.
