Federal health officials are set to release new guidelines for how schools should handle future cases of the H1N1 flu. When H1N1 first appeared last spring school administrators were urged to cancel classes to stop the spread of the virus. Hundreds did and schools scrubbed down hallways and desks.

Now, the government is expected to advise schools to remain open even when cases appear. Instead, schools may be told to identify sick students and staff and send them home.
