Breaking a hip could have a major impact on a person's longevity. A new study shows a quarter of people who suffer that type of fracture die within five years of the injury.

Canadian doctors say hip fractures have long-lasting effects and can trigger a progressive decline in health. The findings are based on 7,700 people randomly selected for a study. They were all aged 50 or older.

The study appears in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
