Uptown residents meet to address crime

August 18, 2009 (CHICAGO) A crowd of uptown residents attended a CAPS meeting on Tuesday night.

Police answered questions about incidents like this one which was recorded on video last week. It shows fighting at the intersection of Leland and Sheridan. Watch the video at: www.uptownupdate.com/2009/08/street-fighting-at-sheridan-leland.html

"It's not about attacking these young people, it's about finding solutions to help them too," said Sandra Reed, Uptown resident.

Police blame the violence on a recent surge in gang activity. But they say overall crime in the area is down about 5 percent compared to last year.

Tuesday night's meeting was quiet compared to another one last night where some residents confronted 46th Ward Alderman Helen Shiller. She sent representatives to the meeting.
