Family honored for saving abandoned baby

August 25, 2009 (CHICAGO) Claudia Hernandez, her husband Victorino Valle and her 8-year-old son Alexander were commended by the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation.

Earlier this month, Alexander heard a baby crying in a garbage can and told his parents who then got help for the baby boy who was okay despite what happened.

The family is still surprised about the whole ordeal.

"You always see this on TV or in the newspaper but I couldn't believe it was happening right in the area where we live," said Valle.

Madigan wants to remind people about the 'safe haven' law which allows parents who feel they cannot keep a newborn baby to hand it to personnel at a hospital, police or fire station.

Parents can walk away with no questions asked and no fear of prosecution.
