The U.S Justice Department and the state of Illinois are suing the Midwest Generation Power Company. They claim the Chicago-based company made changes to its coal-fired power plants in Illinois without installing required pollution control equipment.

The lawsuit says those plants are illegally emitting large amounts of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and other pollutants.

Midwest Generation owns two plants in Chicago, one near Peoria and one in Waukegan and two in Will County,

The company says it is talking with the federal government to try and reach a settlement.
