With all the talk about swine flu, it seems like West Nile has been put on the backburner, but Illinois has had no reports of the mosquito-borne West Nile virus in humans so far this summer. That's a big change from 2002 when we led the nation with 884 cases and 67 deaths from the virus.

West Nile-positive mosquitoes have been found in the Naperville and Joliet areas in the past couple of weeks, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Officials believe there may be a beneficial immunity building up among humans and also say the mild summer is the most likely explanation for our having escaped serious illness resulting from bug bites.
