Former officer gets probation in DUI case

September 10, 2009 Prosecutors said Christopher Berlanga's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when he collided with a car that was also driven by someone who was drunk.

The crash happened at a Highland, Indiana intersection in January of 2006.

Kristina Hilltoonen of Gary pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges last year. A passenger in her car died in the crash.

Berlanga was stripped of policing powers by Chicago police officials after the crash.
