Family: Teen killed by officer was 'great person'

Sept. 12, 2009 (CHICAGO) Family members describe 17-year-old Corey Harris as a good student and excellent basketball player who hoped to play professionally.

Friday, an off-duty officer said he chased Harris after he saw someone get shot near 69th Street and King Drive. The officer said he shot when the fleeing suspect pointed a gun at him.

Relatives insist Harris did not own a gun.

"If you hear shots, there's a lot going on right now, naturally you would run. Real great person, you know, always uplifting," said David Harris, uncle.

"He was not a person of the streets. He wanted to get his education. He loved playing sports, and he was just such a giving person," grandmother Elizabeth Harris said.

The other person who was shot was hospitalized Saturday with a leg wound.

Harris was the father of an 8-month-old daughter, Courtney.
