Early prisoner release to save money

September 19, 2009 The governor says the early release of the prisoners will save the state approximately $5 million.

Those being released include drug offenders and inmates serving time for non-violent property crimes who are within a year of finishing their sentences.

Those convicted of homicide or sex offenses will not be eligible for early release.

Once set free, the inmates will have to wear electronic monitors and report monthly to parole agents. Names of those being released have not been determined.
