A much overdue honor came Thursday for several men who played a big role in the early years of the Chicago Fire Department.A bell was rung honoring members of the Fire Insurance Patrol that died in the line of duty.

While not technically a part of the fire department, the insurance patrol had the job of taking valuable goods from burning buildings.

The patrol was disbanded in 1959.

Those honored today have their names engraved in the pavers at the fallen firefighters' memorial.
