Military families get $1,000 gift cards from Walmart

December 13, 2009 (CHICAGO) Walmart and Operation Home Front teamed up to give $1,000 gift cards to 1,500 families across the United States. Sunday, five of those families had the chance to spend those cards at the company's store on North Avenue in Chicago.

Each family also was given a personal shopper to help them find the items they need this holiday season.

The recipients were able to use the money to buy everyday items, such as food and personal care products. However, many of them also loaded their shopping carts with holiday gifts.

"This is truly a blessing. It means a whole lot to my family with the economy being the way that it is. And I had just gotten laid off from my job. We're moving, and so much stuff is going on," Mechell Wheeler Chisolm said.

"It's great, you know. And that's what it's all about being a soldier. It's companies like Walmart look back and say this is how we feel about you guys for doing what you do," said Staff Sgt. Steven Wright of the U.S. Army.

Gift packages will also be donated to caregivers of the men and women who have been wounded while serving their country.
