Groundbreaking held for MLK apartments

December 21, 2009 (CHICAGO) Community activists gathered at 16th and Hamlin Monday at the site of the proposed "Doctor King Legacy Apartments."

It's the same neighborhood where King and his family lived back in 1966.

Construction on the $17 million affordable housing complex is expected to begin in early 2010.

The plans include 45 residential units and six commercial spaces.

The development team is a partnership between Lawndale Christian Development Corporation, Safeway and the Westside Federation.
