New concerns about growth of superbugs

December 28, 2009 Although washing your hands and using hand sanitizer is encouraged to keep germs away, certain disinfectants encourage the growth of bacteria.

Irish researchers found the bacteria would adapt to fight the disinfectants and antibiotics.

The types disinfectants in question are primarily used in hospitals to kill bacteria on surfaces.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are safe.

The results of the study appear in the January issue of the journal Microbiology.
