Study: Hungry people on the rise in Chicago area

The number of hungry people in Chicago and Cook County is on the rise, according to a new study done by the Greater Chicago Food Depository in conjunction with Feeding America.Findings show about 678,000 people visited food banks, soup kitchens and shelters in 2009.

The figure is up 36 percent from the year 2006.

Twenty percent of people were forced to choose between food and paying for health care. Also, about 37 percent of the people the Greater Chicago Food Depository serves are children under 18.
