Chicago's first day of spring more like winter

Saturday was the first day of spring, but Chicago area residents and visitors certainly could not tell by what was going on outside.Persistent snow and wind made for a miserable day across the area. With temperatures hovering around freezing, heavy wet snow began falling early Saturday and continued through the afternoon.

It was bad news for plants trying to come to life after the recent warm-up, and it was no treat for people either.

"We came to Chicago thinking it was going to be beautiful along the lake front," Lori Chandler said shrugging her shoulders. "I don't know why we thought that."

"You know it's still March. You can't discount the snow until April or May around here. I've lived here long enough to know that, but it happens," said Kevin Engram.

A return to warmer temperatures is forecast for next week.
