Alderman protests closing of SW Side preschool

A veteran Chicago alderman says she will protest the Board of Education's planned closing of a popular Southwest Side preschool.

Twenty-year alderman Ginger Rugai told ABC7 Tuesday that the closing is not a done deal. But the school board said all early childhood classes -- not just Barbara Vick Family Center-- must end. That's because the board faces a budget deficit approaching $1 billion.

"It will be devastating for this community. This program has been here for 11 years," said Cathy Lawton, Vick principal.

"The earliest interaction in teaching of young children is the best for the successful outcome that we're all looking for our children," said Ald. Ginger Rugai, 19th Ward.

The preschool classes at Vick that will close serve 180 children.
