A highly paid state employee has resigned nearly five months after the ABC7 I-Team discovered him spending some workday afternoons at the health club while still on the clock.

Martin Walsh worked for the state of Illinois for 25 years, the last 18 as chief stationary engineer at the Madden Mental Health Center in Maywood.

Last fall, the I-Team observed Walsh taking afternoons off going to a nearby fitness club. Co-workers had filed countless complaints over the years.

After our first report aired in November the state began investigating Walsh. Last week, he was put on administrative leave. Walsh resigned on Monday.

There is no word yet on whether Walsh will receive his full pension.
