The University of Wisconsin-Madison has spent thousands of dollars encouraging students to vote this week to raise their fees by $108 per year for a new fitness center. The $31,000 campaign by the Division of Recreational Sports has supported a student organization that is lobbying for the project.

The division paid a design firm that recommended the $62 million project to create the group's Web site, which features fancy images of the proposed building and refers to the current Natatorium as small, crowded and "dungeonlike."

Dale Carruthers, the division's director, says money had to be spent educating students about the referendum that started Monday and lasts through Wednesday.

If approved, the plan would raise segregated fees by $54 per semester for 30 years starting in 2013.
