Daley: McCormick Place should just charge rent

April 23, 2010 (CHICAGO) The mayor spoke Friday as he and Governor Quinn welcomed officials of the Biotechnology Industry Organization.

The industry will bring more than $15,000 to McCormick Place for its convention from May 3 to May 6.

Representatives for two other big conventions say they will not return to Chicago because it is too expensive.

Daley's proposed solution? McCormick Place becomes only a landlord.

"You're gonna rent the space out. A person comes in, takes the space. He or she--that organization--contracts everything out. The only thing McCormick Place sends is one bill for rent.

The mayor stressed that, unless costs are controlled, the city will keep losing conventions.
