No ruling on divorced father's contempt

April 26, 2010 (CHICAGO) A court order barred him from exposing his daughter to a religion other than Judaism.

Joseph Reyes' lawyers want contempt charges dropped. An injunction by Reyes' estranged wife originally forbade him from exposing the girl to any religion other than Judaism. However, recently the injunction was lifted.

The judge did not rule Monday on dismissing the contempt charge.

"If the message is sent here that he can just violate court orders in the future, that's our concern. We want to set an example," said Steven Lake, Rebecca Reyes' attorney.

"I think, in society, diversity is something that should be embraced. To teach a child otherwise does them a great disservice," Reyes said.

The next court date for the case is May 7.
