A big focus will be on dog fighting. The lab has two areas to examine dogs and document their injuries. It also has equipment for lifting fingerprints and for packaging evidence.
The mobile crime lab will be used across the country. Police say it will offer several benefits.
"It puts us in a position to be able to conduct an onsite investigation as opposed to having to transport and leave the scene. Also it avails us to a different level of intelligence because we can identify specific narcotics that are often used to dope the dogs," said Chief Ernest Brown, Chicago Police Department.
The mobile crime lab is just one of several tools the Humane Society of the United States has to fight animal cruelty.
