May 10, 2010 (CHICAGO)

Investigators say the officer shot Darryl Ellis in an alley as he was allegedly trying to break into the officer's home near 75th and Champlain just before 7 p.m..

Ellis was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition but later died.

Police say the officer heard a noise and opened a door at the back of the house, where he confronted Ellis.

Investigators say the officer shot the offender after he identified himself as an officer and ordered the man to drop a tire iron. But the man reportedly swung at the officer.

The officer was not hurt. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
