Chicago may offer pet owners low-cost distemper shots.

The city council health committee approved the plan Tuesday. It would be a first for the city.

More than a dozen temporary locations would be set up to offer $7 distemper shots for dogs and cats.

Distemper is contagious and can be fatal.

However, the cost of immunizing against it sometimes has proven too expensive for people during difficult economic times.

The full city council is expected to vote on the plan tomorrow.
