History celebrated at former Evanston YMCA

May 22, 2010 (CHICAGO) Attendees were treated to dinner, dancing, and in some cases, reminiscing about Evanston's Emerson Street YMCA.

The Emerson YMCA served as a cultural and community meeting place for African-Americans from 1909 until 1969.

ABC7 Chicago's Karen Jordan served as the evening's emcee.

The Emerson Street YMCA closed in 1969 amid a national push to desegregate YMCA facilities.

The building was torn down in 1980.
