History celebrated at former Evanston YMCA

Sixty years of rich history at a defunct Evanston YMCA were saluted Saturday night. Attendees were treated to dinner, dancing, and in some cases, reminiscing about Evanston's Emerson Street YMCA.

The Emerson YMCA served as a cultural and community meeting place for African-Americans from 1909 until 1969.

ABC7 Chicago's Karen Jordan served as the evening's emcee.

The Emerson Street YMCA closed in 1969 amid a national push to desegregate YMCA facilities.

The building was torn down in 1980.
