Dr. Whitaker spoke at a City Club of Chicago event about his work on the South Side through the University of Chicago's health initiative.
Afterward, he responded to a Chicago Sun-Times report that said Dr. Whitaker's emails and other records were subpoenaed by a federal grand jury.
"The truth is that I left the organization that the subpoenas were about. They received funding in the last month of my tenure at the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Sun-Times framed it as though I was in the center of a lot of things. And I would just say that's inaccurate," said Dr. Whitaker.
Dr. Whitaker is not believed to be a target of the grand jury investigation.
