Suspect allegedly stabbed wife in front of child

May 27, 2010 (VILLA PARK, Ill.) Police said Eric Gilford, 31, stabbed his wife to death on Wednesday. Kristine Gilford, 35, was five months pregnant.

Authorities say Eric Gilford is the only person of interest in the stabbing death Kristine. An alert has been issued for the Downers Grove man. He's described as 6'4" and 210 pounds with brown eyes and hair. Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

"Everyone's uneasy. nice neighborhood," said Dawn Wood, victim's friend.

Gilford's black 2008 Dodge Charger was found abandoned in an industrial area in downtown Fargo, North Dakota. Officials are trying to track the Navy recruiter through his cell phone.

"We don't now that this is his final destination. He could be long gone from Fargo," said Capt. Tod Dahle, Fargo Police Dept.

Witnesses say Kristine was attacked at a friend's west suburban apartment Wednesday around 2:30 p.m. Officials said she was stabbed multiple times while her toddler witnessed the attack and then ran for help.

"The little girl Gracie comes running out with blood all over her," said Lisa Wood, neighbor.

The girl, who turns 4 Thursday, was not physically harmed. But her father said the person responsible should turn himself in.

"Just a little girl. Just to see something like that happen. I couldn't think," said the girl's father, who did not want to be identified.

Police say the attack may be the result of domestic violence; the couple married in February. A May 22 posting on Eric Gilford's facebook page hints at problems in the relationship. It reads, police detectives found my wife living at her physically abusive ex-boyfriend's house."

"We feel so much sadness for the family. The Villa Park Police Department takes this very personally. We are doing everything we can to bring this to a conclusion," said Chief John Heidelmeir, Villa Park Police Department.
