On this Memorial Day weekend, an Army lieutenant found a unique way to stay connected to his community while serving his country.First Lieutenant Brent Nelson of Indiana is in Afghanistan. Along with his military job, he picked up another task recently: he's taking a children's book character named Flat Stanley around the country.

It is part of a class project for his niece, Brooke Husby, who is a first-grade student at Countryside Elementary in Barrington.

In addition to pictures, Nelson sent the Barrington students a letter talking about the geography, language, weather and culture in Afghanistan.

Nelson says a lot of guys in his troop want to get in on the action and take pictures with Stanley, as well.
