Bike to Work Rally

June 18, 2010 Now in it's 20th year, Bike Chicago 2009 has become a five month long celebration of Chicago's commitment to become more bicycle friendly and environmentally conscious. During May, June, July, August and September, more than 100 events will offer fun and exciting ways to promote the benefits of biking as an alternative form of transportation Bike Chicago events include neighborhood, lakefront and architectural bike tours, cycling classes, bike maintenance workshops and much more. This year's premier event is the Bike to Work Rally, Friday, June 18 on Daley Plaza from 7:30 am to 7:00 pm

MEDIA CHALLENGE The Mayor's Office of Special Events, Goose Island and other Chicago media in a bike v. car challenge. This year cyclists will race against an automobile from the Goose Island Brewery at Clybourn and Sheffield to Daley Plaza, a short 3-mile ride! Back again this year, the Goose Island 312 race team the "Spider Monkeys" will be part of the festivities. The race starts at 7:30 a.m. in order to have all racers at Daley Plaza for a group photo.

Enjoy a free breakfast, free t-shirt, live music, the 312 Beer Garden, Bike Polo and much more.

Bike in for the morning rally and stay all day! Join fellow cyclists, former motorists, Goose Island and the City of Chicago at the Bike to Work Rally on Friday, June 18 beginning at 7:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Daley Plaza, 50 West Washington. At the rally, bikers will receive a FREE continental breakfast and t-shirt while supplies last, free Pepsi Bike Valet and a raffle with great prizes, including bikes, cycling gear and more. Winners will be posted on-line at www.bikechicago.us .

The first Rally was held in 1991 as a one day event and a few years later it became a week, then a month. Now after 20 years, it has grown into the five month long Bike Chicago program that includes more than 100 cycling events. Mayor Daley's Bike to Work Rally encourages all Chicagoans to choose the economic and healthy alternative and become a bike commuter. This year Bicycling Magazine once again singled out Chicago by naming it of the top 10 bike-friendly city in the United States and singled out Mayor Daley for his enthusiasm. On June 18 show the same excitement for cycling and put down the keys, step off the bus and bike your way to work!

Bike Chicago 2010 is presented by the Mayor's Office of Special Events and Goose Island 312. What could be better after a long hot ride through the city than a nice, cold Chicago beer? 312 Urban Wheat Ale, Chicago's beer, is the presenting sponsor for Bike Chicago. Enjoy the Goose Island 312 beer garden at the Bike to Work Rally on June 18. Finish your ride, then take your taste buds for a spin.

Throughout the day, enjoy the Goose Island 312 Beer Garden (opens at 11:00 a.m.) and live music on the Plaza beginning at 7:30 a.m. Bands scheduled to play are Environmental Encroachment, Schwinntonation and Pawnshop Band. The morning program begins at 8:00 a.m. followed by activities such as Bike Polo, free giveaways, demonstrations and much more. With the extended time, enjoy visiting with fellow cyclists and Bike Chicago partners for giveaways and biking tips.
