The family of a Chicago girl who apparently drowned while vacationing in Wisconsin is thanking people who helped search for her.

Sofia Khan, 9, was on a kayak by herself when sudden winds and a fast current pulled her into Lake Michigan. It happened two weeks ago in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Her father tried to rescue Sofia. Despite intense searches, her body has not been found.

Sofia's father thanked everybody who's supported the family during their ordeal.

"Our family is forever indebted to the people of Ostberg and Sheboygan County for their tremendous support and generosity and the countless volunteers who came from near and far," said Omer Khan.

Volunteer searchers included people who combed beaches, boaters, pilots and divers who searched the waters.
