A 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department has been charged in connection with an investigation into bribes and extortion involving the towing industry in the city.

Officer James Wodnicki is accused of soliciting a $150 payment from a tow truck operator who, at the time, was secretly working for the FBI.

Wodnicki is charged with one count of attempted extortion.

The case is the result of a five-year federal investigation known as Operation Tow Scam. So far it has led to charges against eight people, including five current or former police officers.
