Talks have resumed to end the strike that brought work on major construction projects in the Chicago area to a standstill.

Both sides returned to the bargaining table this morning.

Union laborers and operating engineers walked off the job last week, shutting down hundreds of job sites.

The strike affects about 8,500 workers.

The two sides last met on Wednesday and have been trying to reach an agreement on health insurance and wages.

The unions are seeking a pay increase of 15 percent over three yeras.

The employers have offered an increase of just under 4 percent.
