Governor Pat Quinn Saturday signed a law requiring candidates of the same party running for the two offices to be jointly nominated at the primary election stage.
Quinn says the people of Illinois deserve to have their governor and lieutenant governor working together as a team.
Currently, candidates for governor and lieutenant governor are nominated separately at the primary and then joined on the ballot as a gubernatorial ticket for the general election.
In the February primary this year, pawnbroker Scott Lee Cohen won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor but dropped out of the race following allegations of domestic violence.
He is running for the top job as an independent.
The new law goes into effect next year.
