Losing weight may ease hot flashes

Dropping a few pounds may help ease hot flashes.

A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine compared women who were encouraged to exercise more and eat less to those with little weight loss coaching.

On average, the women who had the coaching lost about 16 pounds and said their hot flash symptoms got better.

It's unclear why weight loss would have an effect. Researchers say it could be a result of the "insulation" from extra fat, or it could have to do with lifestyle differences between overweight and slimmer women.
