New laws to protect against sex-related crimes

July 18, 2010 (CHICAGO) Several of the bills involve crimes that use technology to target children.

Under a new 'sexting' law, minors who are involved in distributing lewd images of another minor may be taken into custody by law enforcement.

One state lawmaker said, when it comes to technology, it is important that law keeps up with the practice.

"Those who wish to do ill, whether its robbing seniors of their bank accounts or preying on our children, they are harnessing these new technologies. And if we're not on top of this, if we're not ahead of them, they're going to be ahead of us, and our families are going to suffer," said Ill. Rep. Greg Harris, a Democrat representing Chicago.

The governor praised the General Assembly for passing the new laws, which take effect January 1, 2011.
