Group wants pay freeze for Ill. lawmakers

July 22, 2010 The Illinois Policy Institute says the General Assembly's base pay is almost $68,000 yearly, or 47 percent more than the average Illinoisan earns.

The institute claims that disparity will grow because lawmakers receive automatic raises without having to vote for the extra money.

The institute wants senators and representatives to publicly vote on legislative pay hikes.

Illinois, which ranks fifth in population, pays its lawmakers the nation's fifth highest salary.
