The number of children being treated for kidney stones at some U.S. hospitals has been rising for the past decade and researchers aren't sure why.

A new government funded study looked at 42 affiliated children's hospitals and saw kidney stone cases among kids rise from 125 in 1999 to nearly 1,400 in 2008.

Experts warn those numbers may not represent the general population overall, but point to rising rates of childhood obesity as a possible contributing factor to the increase in kidney stone cases.
