Promoting gardens in the midst of the city

Dozens of urban gardeners from the city's West Side and suburban Oak Park joined up Sunday for the first time.

They harvested and planted vegetables together and learned about gardening.

The community gardening movement is getting increasingly popular across the country.

In many cases, it is a direct response to people's desire to grow their own food.

The event was a partnership between Root Riot, Youth Guidance, and the students and faculty of Frederick Douglass Academy High School.
