Illinois has a new law on the books to protect pet owners across the state.Under a bill signed by Governor Quinn Sunday, pet stores, animal shelters and control facilities must disclose health history and the name of the breeder before selling cats or dogs.

The information is supposed to be posted on or near the animal's cage. Potential owners must also receive a copy of that information before buying the animal.

The law takes effect January 1.
