Men's Fall Fashion

August 24, 2010 (PRESS RELEASE)

Traveling back through the decades, this fall season seeks inspiration from the masculine themes of the past. Iconic fashion eras such as the 1920s reemerge with fabrics including plush tweeds, stunning knitwear and refined leathers at the forefront. Simple wool trousers and rubber-soled military boots, most anchored in a palette of black, grey and espresso, are also prominent trends reminiscent of the refined, worldly charm of yesteryear.

A contrasting ode to '70s punk rock and '90s grunge also appears in the form of the modern man's fashions, inspired by the musicians that made those eras so iconic. From The Ramones' skinny distressed jeans to Kurt Cobain's understated grunge look inspired by his Seattle roots, culture and fashion meld seamlessly this season.

"The classics have a fresh, new appeal, making it easy for the modern man to reinterpret the trends of the past and incorporate them in his current day wardrobe," says Kevin Harter, VP of fashion direction for Men's and Young World. "Already a coveted headquarters for the most cutting edge fashions, Bloomingdale's is taking its assortment to the next level with new additions ranging from urban outdoorsman gear by Billy Reid to timeless suiting by Canali."

Collaborating with HBO's new Martin Scorsese project, Bloomingdale's fashion travels back in time to Atlantic City in the 1920s. Double-breasted tailored suits from Lardini, French cuff shirts from Bloomingdale's Men's Store, vintage brass cufflinks and beautiful tweed outerwear from Paul Smith provide the perfect wardrobe for a stroll in the salt air. Other key nostalgic pieces include:

  • Patterned sport coat
  • Brogue shoe
  • Patch pocket sport coat
  • Two-button notch lapel
  • Chalk-stripe suit
  • Alternative formalwear
  • Pike Street

This trend combines outdoor adventure with West Coast grunge - thus taking it's name from the town of Seattle. Winter sports such as snowboarding and ice fishing play a crucial role to this maximally layered, marshmallow silhouetted look. Chunky, cabled sweaters from D&G and distressed basics from Norse Projects tap right into this Nordic trend's core. Other top picks include:

  • Heather flannel
  • Long cardigan
  • Bomber jacket
  • Harvest colored denim
  • Distressed jean
  • Combat boots
  • Nordic sweater
  • Striped tees & sweaters
  • Nouveau Punk

Inspired by '70s rock, Nouveau Punk represents the union of a relaxed military look with slim pants, geometric pattern knits, oversized tees and demure color blocking. The little black motorcycle jacket by John Varvatos and lean bottoms by Marc by Marc Jacobs are staple pieces to this rebellious, dark toned trend. Other favorites include:

  • Geometric pattern jacket
  • Biker jacket
  • Printed woven
  • Studded belt
  • Fingerless gloves
  • Slim cargo
  • Slouchy hat
  • Lug sole shoe
  • Man VS Wild, Athleticism goes outdoors

Inspired by modern day adventurers and boundless exploration, this trend highlights tech jackets, micro fiber sweat pants and neon insets. This adventure-inspired look is multi-functional, making the most of utilitarian features such as cargo pockets, zippers, Velcro and snaps, as shown by designers such as Moncler and Burberry Sport. Additional travelers' essentials include:

  • Performance outerwear
  • Camouflage
  • Alpine boot
  • Fleece bottom accents
  • Shearling trim
  • Officer jacket
  • Boiled sweaters
  • Cargo pants
  • Oxford Street

Neat and tailored, yet relaxed and easy going sums up this trend of laid-back sophistication. Shirts by Elie Tahari should be pressed and bowties by Billy Reid are tied tight, but this Englishman's style has a touch of distress too, with overly layered pieces and trendy accents. Other top looks include:

  • Double-breasted cardigan
  • Gum-soled shoe
  • Short peacoat
  • Chino
  • Felted hat
  • Defined eyeglass frames
  • Poor boy blazer
  • Toggle sweater
