MJ Fanvention is going on at the Radisson Hotel and Star Plaza Theatre.
Memorabilia is on display, and Jackson's kindergarten teacher was meeting fans Friday.
She says it was clear he had talent even at the age of 6.
"He had perfect pitch, anything he sang was right on and his voice was particularly good, just light and pure his tone was good," said teacher Felicia Childress.
The Fanvention runs through Sunday.
Gary celebration for Michael Jackson
Mayor Rudy Clay of Gary, Indiana and Joe Jackson, Michael's father will join other family members, neighbors and fans in a cake ceremony at the childhood home of Michael, Janet and the other members of the Jackson Five on August 28.
"The passing of our favorite son, Michael Jackson is still fresh in our hearts. A year later, on his birthday we honor his memory as a great and giving person and as the world's greatest entertainer," said Clay.
