Mom killed, 2 babies hurt in car crash, fire

August 29, 2010 (CHICAGO) A fire department spokesperson says the children were pulled from the burning wreckage near 130th Street and Evans by a Good Samaritans who also tried to pull out the mother but were unsuccessful.

"Other people started seeing what we were doing, and they were being Good Samaritans also, started coming out and helping us, but we couldn't get the woman out," Keith Coley said.

"The little 8-month-old, I had her in my hands, and I wouldn't allow her to go to sleep because she looked like she was trying, but I kept shaking her hand and pressing on her heart to keep her awake," Good Samaritan Flander McCurdy said.

The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. Saturday. It was not clear as what caused the car to hit the light pole.

The mother is identified as 23-yea- old Christina Bates. The cause of the crash is still not known. The babies were still hospitalized Sunday.
